Treat Cystic Acne At the Source (with Ice and a limited Carb Diet)

Updated on June 3, 2014

Cystic Acne is Stubborn

Cystic Acne is physically painful and permanently scarring in multiple ways. Cystic acne is stubborn and relentless. Just as you find that you've managed to clear you skin, a deep inflammatory cyst appears to erupt out of nowhere. And of course usuallyat the most inopportune time.

I Tried Everything (even Accutane)

Have you tried all topical, oral, and cleansing regimens with no avail? I have! I even tried Accutane and although it completely dried me out, my acne was unaffected. The Accutane actually made the acne worse. I gave up hope after several years thinking that I would outgrow acne with age. Unfortunately, I am in my mid-30s and still have acne. Thankfully, I now know how to help control the underlying issues that keep the outbreaks to a minimum.

My Dermatologist Failed

My dermatologists (I saw several) failed to inform me that cystic acne is for the most part an inflammatory condition. Why didn't they tell me this?? Why wasn't I warned that my diet and any unnecessary heat to my face would aggravate the cystic formations?

It seems common sense now that what I eat will affect the quality of my skin and any overheating will cause inflammation within my pores and hair follicles. Why wasn't I told that steam baths and saunas and steam from facials would cause more aggravation?

Eat Less Carbs (less sugars in diet)

My acne was the worst during my college years when I prepared myself easy and fast meals which primarily consisted of pizza, pasta, sandwiches, and more pizza. Always studying or preparing for some doctorate examination, I stocked my fridge with easy microwavable meals that helped facilitate my stressful lifestyle. Being vegetarian, my microwavable meals all had some sort of pasta item or was heavy in carbohydrates.

I was not made aware at the time that what I eat, what I consume, will reflect outwards and definitely reflect negatively onto my skin.

Consume more Vegetables, Fruit, Fiber, and Fish!

I am now more aware and cognizant of what I consume. I stay away from white bread. I stay away from pizza, pasta, and potatoes. Of course that is super difficult for me since I like to maintain a vegetarian diet.

I have incorporated fish and primarily salmon (high in omega3) to my diet. Overall I eat well and feel well and not weighed down by those heavy carbohydrates!

ICE (Ice minimizes inflammation)

I don't know why I never thought of using ice to calm down my hot, red, and inflamed face. I now ice my face after a hot day in the sun, after a steam facial, or a day at the gym. My face always seems to be 5 degrees warmer than the rest of my body in temperature. The ice helps to regulate my temperature considerable and eliminates unnecessary breakouts.

I limit my hot showers and limit the time in the sun. All these lifestyle changes are making a difference!
