Benefits of Yoga Exercise for the Mind and Spirit

Updated on March 24, 2014

Yoga has been around for several centuries but is just now gaining attention in the western world. Yoga originiated in ancient India where individuals engaged in mindful and body exercises. Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Sheiks have practiced yoga for over 5000 years. The United States is just now accepting this new trend as an outlet for stress, anger management, and overall tension relief.

There is a vast amount of research currently available indicating that yoga is beneficial to eliminate stress and improve your over-all well being. It is a great exercise for the mind, the breathe, and your body. Yoga can help reduce inches off your waist-line and reduce stress and tension in your muscles and joints. Engaging in yoga will improve your flexibility, posture, and balance as well as help you relax and stay calm.

I encourage you to give yoga a try!

Don't Get Discouraged!

Yoga is intended to loosen your muscles and increase your flexibility. Don't be discouraged if you are not able to obtain correct posture and poses initially. It will take time for you body to develop flexibility and to develop strength. Keeping your body balanced in steady during poses will also be difficult initially. You may find yourself teetering and falling initially. It will all get much easier with practice!

All Ages

Yoga is great for seniors and children as well. Seniors especially are not able to engage in strenuous activity so yoga serves a good replacement for typical exercise. Walking, jogging, and swimming are encouraged in addition to the yoga practice. However, with yoga, even seniors can expect to find improvement in muscle tone, strength and increase in flexibility.

Calm the Mind

Yoga can calm the mind and energize your spirit by engaging in slow purposeful movements. With each movement, the breath is engaged and held during the pose. Breathing is a significant component of yoga and is deliberately slowed down to steady the body in each pose. As you get comfortable and regular in your yoga practice, the breathing will become natural. However, initially, it is best to have an instructor guide you in breathing in and out during each change in position.
